I’m Kelly Morrissey, Managing Director of the Center for Continuing Education at Yale Divinity School. This episode, we have Kate Ott, Lecturer in Practical Theology, and Almeda Wright, Associate Professor of Religious Education. They’re discussing 1 Peter 3:13-22, which is appointed for the Sixth Sunday of Easter in Year A. Here’s the text.
[1 Peter 3:13-22]
Now who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good? But even if you do suffer for doing what is right, you are blessed. Do not fear what they fear, and do not be intimidated, but in your hearts sanctify Christ as Lord. Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you;
yet do it with gentleness and reverence. Keep your conscience clear, so that, when you are maligned, those who abuse you for your good conduct in Christ may be put to shame. For it is better to suffer for doing good, if suffering should be God’s will, than to suffer for doing evil.
For Christ also suffered for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, in order to bring you to God. He was put to death in the flesh, but made alive in the spirit, in which also he went and made a proclamation to the spirits in prison, who in former times did not obey, when God waited patiently in the days of Noah, during the building of the ark, in which a few, that is, eight persons, were saved through water.
And baptism, which this prefigured, now saves you—not as a removal of dirt from the body, but as an appeal to God for a good conscience, through the resurrection of Jesus Christ, who has gone into heaven and is at the right hand of God, with angels, authorities, and powers made subject to him.
Kate Ott:
As an ethicist reading this passage, the first line, “Now, who will harm you if you are eager to do what is good?” I had to laugh a little bit thinking is that not the central problem of motivation behind ethics? So, for me, it felt important to think about the context for this letter and the people to whom it was being written. And thinking about if I were, you know, a non-Jewish Gentile who had converted to Christianity, I’m in the midst of the Roman Empire, probably somewhere up in now where we call Turkey, not surrounded by huge communities of other Christians. I’m ridiculed for this choice. Minoritized for being part of this Christian group. I would need encouragement. I would need motivation. I’m just not sure that the motivation of alignment with Jesus’ suffering would be right for me. Though, I might be historically looking back on that atonement theory and rewriting an interpretation of it.
Almeda Wright:
Right. Or even because of the distance we now have from that lived reality, we’re able to make different decisions about what suffering means or how to make meaning through suffering. And, you know, all the time we, you know, I teach Solensky, and yes, I’m bringing Solensky into a conversation about First Peter where he has this whole riff on means versus ends. And even how our assessment of something, of a particular action, whether it’s right or wrong, whether it’s a valid reaction or not always changes with historical distance or time or not being embedded in the situation.
So, I feel that because I too wonder. I’m like, no, we don’t want to, you know, glorify the suffering part. Because one of the headers in my study Bible was like, this is the passages that teaches you about suffering for doing what is right. And I’m like, but I don’t want to glorify suffering for doing what is right. At the same time, when you step back though and say, you are suffering, what’s the narrative and what’s the meaning that I’m going to add to my suffering that’s going to allow me to fight another day, suffer another day, live another day? And so, in some ways, the move to this type of, well connect with Jesus – you’re not the only one who suffered. Or there is a community, even if it’s not your immediate community, that’s larger than you that understands or that is valuing what you’re going through. While I still am not like, you know, very easy with the idea of suffering for doing what is, you know, what’s right, it makes sense. So, I guess I’m more sympathetic or empathetic to that type of read or that type of connection or the type of encouragement that’s being offered to this community here.
Kate Ott:
And definitely because of the word community, for me when I hear you, that changes how I read the suffering.
Almeda Wright:
Hmm.
Kate Ott:
If I’m an individual person reading this text hundreds of years later, and I’m interpreting this theologically as, Jesus suffered, these people suffered, I also must suffer. My questions come up around, one, who’s promoting that in your interpretation? Two, who else around you is part of that? What does it mean to be doing good, to be doing right even though you know suffering will come? And so, my contemporary mind goes to the kinds of advice given or sermons talked about when someone perhaps is experiencing intimate partner violence, and not equating these two at all, but someone who perhaps is in a tradition where being, you know, gay, lesbian, trans is something you just need to suffer through.
Almeda Wright:
Mm-hmm.
Kate Ott:
And we then theologize that by saying, well, Jesus also suffered. Raise that up.
Almeda Wright:
You’re right. And so, when you use suffering in a particularly harmful way, we have to ask the question of not just how does a community or an individual make meaning about suffering, but who benefits from a theology of suffering? Who benefits? What symptoms, what structures are left in place or intact when you, we wholesale say, give a theology that says you should suffer. And part of that also though, whenever there’s even a wholesale kind of like theology of suffering, we recognize that that’s not received or reinforced in the same ways for same people.
And when you’re thinking about it, of course we’ve read Delores Williams, Sisters in the Wilderness, and there’s an entire, by the way, my whole theology, my entire MDiv trajectory was transformed reading this. And I was like, oh my God, surrogacy, you’re right. People are being scapegoated. There’s a way that in her particular context, black women’s bodies had been used in this suffering servant kind of metaphor, or as in like the surrogate for everyone else’s pain or problems. And so, for her to say there’s got to be a better interpretation, we don’t have to offer this wholesale because it is not benefiting this community of black women for them to continue being surrogates, to continue being scapegoated in this particular way. And so, what else is liberative in the narrative?
And so of course you have to come back to a reading like this and say, let’s read it in conversation with a set of questions that says, is there something else liberative besides you saying that you should suffer when you’re doing good or you’re doing what’s right and therefore suffering comes with the territory. Just, you know, suck it up.
Kate Ott:
Definitely. I think we need to disrupt the suffering comes with the territory, just suck it up. But it also points to that wider systemic context. So, when Williams is writing Sisters in the Wilderness and interpreting that for us, and pushing back against an atonement theory of surrogacy, she’s also pointing out differences around voluntary and involuntary suffering.
Almeda Wright:
That’s right.
Kate Ott:
And turning our attention to the systems of power in which Jesus is existing…
Almeda Wright:
Right.
Kate Ott:
…in that moment. To turning our attention to the systems of power of chattel slavery in which black women in that time are existing and continue to exist in terms of systemic racism. I imagine that these believers that Peter is writing to feel as though they are in a system of the Roman Empire that they too need to resist. And so perhaps when they hear, your suffering has meaning, they themselves see that wider context of the Roman Empire. They think, yes, ethics is about needing to choose what is right each day, and yet that is never going to be an easy choice when we live in unjust systems of power.
Almeda Wright:
So also in this passage, I’m always struck though, in terms of like the narrative around suffering, but also the narrative of how you are supposed to react. I remember looking more closely at verse 15. It says, “Always be ready to make your defense to anyone who demands from you an accounting for the hope that is in you yet do it with gentleness and reverence.” So immediately I bucked up against the idea of needing to always have to defend why I’m part of something or why I am in a community and making meaning in a particular way. But also, to have to do it with gentleness and with reverence. And so, there was something in this passage where, again, I’m like, I get the why. I know that if you come abruptly or brashly it’s also like, you know, the be the quiet black woman, not the loud angry one. And so, there’s a question of what’s happening for this community? What are the other systems in place? What are the other narratives that they’re having to buck up against in order to be here. Just to navigate their set of beliefs, their set of practices in these embodied ways that automatically, it sounds like are being read or could potentially be read differently depending on their delivery.
Kate Ott:
That immediately makes me think of Katie’s Canon.
Almeda Wright:
Mm-hmm.
Kate Ott:
When Katie Canon teaches us that dominant powers already have a system of ethics that do not serve those who are being oppressed, and that those who are oppressed have things, have virtues, have values that are not going to fit the dominant system.
Almeda Wright:
Mm-hmm.
Kate Ott:
I don’t know how one, with gentleness and reverence, says back to the dominant power, actually, lying is virtuous. I’m not saying that Dr. Cannon says that. I’m playing it out here for a moment, right? If lying keeps my people alive, if lying keeps someone safe. To me, it’s always the context. It’s who am I negotiating with? And could that be the right thing right now to alleviate some of this suffering?
Almeda Wright:
Mm-hmm. And I mean, probably an even an easier metaphor is does stealing food when I cannot afford it, benefit the system? Of course, that’s wrong in the system and the particular set of virtues, but it benefits an immediate need in my family or whatever it might be. And those are always the places where you’re like, yes, it does not align with the dominant cultures, values and virtues. But what then does it say about, well, no, I have to be fed, and this system is not set up to feed or to provide for that type of actually immediate physical need.
Kate Ott:
And I wonder here if those types of things are going on and if the writer of this letter to this community is saying, he’s almost pushing them. One to say, you’re going to suffer. Like, that’s the way the world is set up. It doesn’t mean it always has to be that. That’s hopefully what our community is trying to change by the example that we’re setting by the good that we are choosing. But also pushing them one step further to think about how to communicate that, how to educate the community that’s around them, about a greater good.
