Hello, 😀Ā

Ā  Ā  I just went through the Psalms course and wanted to discuss the contradiction of what I’ve been taught which was that Psalms are meant for instruction but also not all the time because of the deep emotions of anger that are expressed. How can we differentiate between the two?

Thanks

I’m also looking for all the Psalms of thanksgiving. As I went through the course, I was able to identify all of Gunkel’s themes. I want to know this because I would like to identify this theme as I’m reading the psalms. Thanks. I hit control find ā€œthanksgivingā€ on my computer in each of the study guides and I’m 99% that they are not listed like the others unless they use different wordage?Ā

Gunkel identified a number of types of psalms:

  1. psalms of lament, both individual and communal (psalms of ā€œindividual complaintā€ are: Psalm 3, 5–7, 13, 17, 22, 25-28, 32, 38, 39, 42, 43, 51, 54-57, 59, 61, 63, 64, 69–71, 86, 88, 102, 109, 120, 130, and 140-43. The psalms of ā€œcommunal complaintā€ are: 44, 74, 79, 80, 83, and 89).
  2. psalms of thanksgiving
  3. royal psalms: 2, 18, 20, 21, 45, 72, 101, 110, 132, and 144:1-11.
  4. psalms of divine enthronement: 93, 97, and 99.Ā
  5. wisdom psalms: 1, 14, 37, 73, 91, 112, 119, and 128. Other wisdom books include Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, Job, Ecclesiasticus, and Wisdom of Solomon)
  6. hymns: (8, 19, 29, 33, 65, 67, 68, 96, 98, 100, 103–5, 111, 113, 114, 117, 135, and 145–50). A hymn is a praise song for the creator. Hymns tend to center around three main themes, which are often intertwined: creation, nature, and kingship.
