Instructions for Facilitators

Each of the weekly modules in this course contains a short video featuring scholars of the text, a study guide, and discussion questions. Certain modules also feature additional resources for further study.

Below is the schedule for which portions of the text are being studied in a given week, occasionally including optional reading when relevant. In this unit, not all chapters of each book will be covered. To cover the entirety of a given book, please refer to the “optional” reading callouts.

Week 1 – The Historical Problem of Conquest

1. Prepare for the session by reading Joshua chapters 1-6.
2. Reflect on the following questions before beginning this module:
   Before you read the text or watch the video, consider the following: What do you know or remember about the Book of Joshua and/or Judges from times you’ve interacted with these stories in the past?

Week 2 – The Story of Jericho

1. Prepare for the session by reviewing Joshua chapters 3-6.
2. Reflect on the following questions before beginning this module: Before you read the text or watch the video, consider the following: what have you been taught about Joshua and the battle of Jericho in the past?

Week 3 – The Case of Achan

1. Prepare for the session by reading Joshua chapters 7-9.

Week 4 – The Moral Problem of Conquest

1. Prepare for the session by reviewing the book of Joshua, especially chapters 1-9.

Week 5 – The Historical Idea and Setting of the Judges Cycle

1. Prepare for the session by reading Judges chapter 1.
2. Optional: Read judges chapters 2 and 3.

Week 6 – Jael and Deborah

1. Prepare for the session by reading Judges chapters 4-5.
2. Optional: Read Judges chapters 6-10.

Week 7 – Jephthah’s Daughter

1. Prepare for the session by reading Judges chapter 11.
2. Optional: Read Judges chapters 12-18.

Week 8 – When There Was No King in Israel

1. Prepare for the session by reading Judges chapters 19-21.
