Interpreting the Text:

1. How does the Lukan version of the parable of the Banquet differ from that in Matthew?
2. Is it helpful to think of Jesus’ teaching as involving dramatic hyperbole? Or Ddoes that undercut the radical character of his challenge to disciples?
3. Dr. Attridge suggests that in Luke the parables of Jesus may have multiple different meanings (as compared to Matthew, for example). What are the benefits or trappings of parables that are subject to different, valid interpretations?

Applying the Text:

1. Is the notion of “radical hospitality” really useful in today’s environment? How have you shown “radical hospitality?”
2. Jesus warns the disciples that following him will cause division, rejection, and even persecution. Has your commitment to follow Christ caused tension in your relationships?
