Leviticus Part 1 – Discussion Questions

Now that we’ve provided an overview of “the law” in Part 1, let’s take a closer look at the first half of the book of Leviticus.

Step One: Before you open your Bible or watch the video, pause and reflect on the following:

• What comes to mind when you hear the word “sacrifice?”
• What comes to mind when you hear the words “purity” or “impurity?”
• What does “holiness” mean to you?

Step Two: Take five minutes to look through the first half of Leviticus, noting any places in the text that stand out to you. When you’re done, consider the following:

• Do you notice any themes or patterns emerging in the text? Were there certain words or phrases that showed up more frequently than others?
• Was there anything that surprised or bothered you in what you just read?

Step Three: Watch this week’s video and then discuss the following:

• Did this video discussion help clarify or change your perception of sacrificial laws found in Leviticus? If so, in what ways?
• In today’s video (14:40), Dr. Baden observes that “the main thing about impurity [in the Hebrew Bible] that people often misunderstand is that it’s totally okay to be impure.” Did you find this surprising? Why or why not?
• Do you still have questions about any of the topics discussed this week that you’d like to return to and/or explore further in this Bible study series? Write them down.
