Introducing Biblical Law – Discussion Questions

In this Bible study series, we will take a closer look at Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy, considering these texts within their historical context. This week’s discussion begins with an overview of “the law” in the Hebrew Bible.

Step One: Before you open your Bible or watch the video, pause and reflect on the following:

• What do you think of when you think of “the law” in the Bible?
• What have you been taught about Old Testament laws in the past?

Step Two: Watch this week’s video and then discuss the following:

• Did this video discussion help clarify or change your perception of “the law” in any way? What did you learn?
• Do you think it is possible to reconcile contradictions found in the many laws of the Old Testament? Should attempts be made to reconcile them at all?
• Does knowing that biblical laws evolved and were reinterpreted over time change your perception of “the law?” If so, in what ways?
• Do you think “the law” has value for modern readers given the unique ancient contexts in which they were developed? Why or why not?
• What additional questions do you still have about “the law” that you hope to explore in this series?
