Questions for Discussion:

Our series on biblical law concludes this week with the final half of Deuteronomy.

Step One: Before opening your Bible or watching the video reflect on the following:

• What do you remember from last week’s discussion?
• Did any new questions about Deuteronomy (and/or “the law” in general) come up this week that you’d like to explore further?

Step Two: Read Deuteronomy chapters 6 and 13. When you’re done, consider the following questions:

• What stood out to you in what you just read?
• Was there anything surprising, bothersome, and/or familiar in this text?

Step Three: Watch this week’s video and then discuss the following questions:

• Did this discussion change your reading of this text in any way(s)? If so, how?
• Knowing what you know now about the historical context of Deuteronomy, how do you interpret the word “love” in the Shema (Deut. 6:1-9)?
• Do you think “love” can have multiple meanings in this context (e.g. both emotional meanings and/or loyalty, devotion, legal obligation, etc.)?
• What, in your view, is Deuteronomy’s “legacy?” Note that there can be multiple answers to this question.
