Interpretation Questions:

1. Where is the line between the Genesis stories we accept as non-historical ancient myth and those we read as historically plausible? Why do we draw the line where we do?

I find that drawing the line between non-historical ancient myth and those we read as historically plausible can be quite difficult and a bit blurry at times. When talking about the primeval stories in in Genesis 1-11 they almost have an other worldy feel to them with stories about talking snakes and strolling around the garden of Eden with this strange Being Called God and spirit beings mating with mortal women and prods ucing giant offspring etc. Whereas Genesis 12-50 almost have a family feel about them. Jelousy among siblings.family feuds war between different kings ect. Yet each contain things that seem to make sense and others seem so far fetched in both the primeval and patriarchal portions of the book. I suppose that's why I'm taking this course to hopefully have a better understanding of how it all fits to gether or at least have a better grasp of the basics of how I can take this ancient literature and somehow make it relevant for today.

What I also find fascinating is how God guided the Shepherds through dreams, how they obeyed foiling Herod's axis of evil. I have often wondered how the animals responded the baby Jesus and his mother invading their space. Did they huddle around the babe on bended knees in a posture of worship , as well as acting as a blanket to keep mom and child warm? Surely!

Zoom | December 4, 11, and 18 | 7:30 pm Eastern | 3 Sessions

The Gospel of Luke offers our most extensive biblical look at the anticipation of Jesus’s advent. Through angel visits, the enthusiastic response of faithful women, the lowly circumstances of the birth, and the earliest days of the incarnation, the Gospel trumpets the significance and shape of God’s appearing among us in Bethlehem. Join the Rev. Dr. Allen Hilton for a three-week engagement with all this wonder.
